Hashing & Checksums
SHA2 Digest Calculator
Calculate SHA-2 text digests or verify a local file against an expected SHA-256 checksum.
This tool runs open-source code from CyberChef by GCHQ (Apache License 2.0). See open-source credits.
Text mode hashes UTF-8 bytes with the selected SHA-2 variant. File mode compares a local file with an expected SHA-256.
Text mode returns a digest. File mode reports Match or Mismatch.
- Check a downloaded installer or ISO against the SHA-256 value on the vendor's site.

Calculate the digest of abc
Input: abc
Settings: Text digest, Size 256, Rounds 64
Result: ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad
The default Size is 512. Select Size 256 to get a SHA-256 digest.
Choose text hashing or file verification
- For text, choose Size and keep the default Rounds for that size.
- For files, select Verify file SHA-256 and choose the file.
- Paste the publisher’s expected checksum, then select Verify SHA-256.
Exact bytes and trusted comparison values
- Changing Rounds creates a nonstandard digest.
- File verification reads the complete file into memory.
- A matching checksum does not establish file safety or publisher identity.
