Find the median of an unsorted number list. Odd counts return the middle value; even counts average the middle two. Negative values are supported.

This tool runs open-source code from CyberChef by GCHQ (Apache License 2.0). See open-source credits.

The calculator sorts numeric observations. It selects the middle value, or averages the two middle values for an even count.

The result contains the median only.

  • Report a typical house price, salary, or response time when a few values are extreme.

Find the middle of an even-sized sample

Input: 1 2 3 100

Settings: Commas, spaces, semicolons, or new lines separate numbers.

Result: 2.5

The count is even, so the median averages the middle pair 2 and 3. The mean of the same list is 26.5.

Enter values and check numeric sorting

  1. Paste the observations and choose their Delimiter.
  2. Keep repeated observations in the list.
  3. Check the middle position in the sorted values.
  • Unreadable entries can be skipped silently and change the middle position.
  • An empty parsed list returns NaN.
  • The tool does not calculate quartiles or a weighted median.
