Bacon Cipher Decoder
Decode five-symbol Bacon cipher groups into letters. Match the alphabet, translation, and inversion settings from the original message.
This tool runs open-source code from CyberChef by GCHQ (Apache License 2.0). See open-source credits.
Bacon Cipher Decoder turns five-symbol groups of A/B or 0/1 back into letters. Pick the same Alphabet and Translation that the encoder used. 00111 00100 01010 01010 01101 decodes to HELLO with the Standard alphabet.
Each five-symbol group becomes one uppercase letter. Under the Standard alphabet, I and J share a code, and U and V share a code.
- Read a Bacon cipher clue written as A/B or 0/1 groups.
- Decode a message hidden in two typefaces after you transcribe it to A and B.
- Check a message produced by Bacon Cipher Encoder.
Instructions
- Paste the five-symbol groups into Input.
- Choose the Alphabet and Translation that match the source. Turn on Invert Translation if A and B appear swapped.
- Run the tool and read the uppercase letters.
Example
Input: 00111 00100 01010 01010 01101
Settings: Bacon Cipher Decoder with Alphabet Standard (I=J and U=V), Translation 0/1, and Invert Translation off.
Result: HELLO
Bacon Cipher Decoder returns I for a J and U for a V under the Standard alphabet. ABAAA BAABB ABABB ABBBA in A/B form returns IUMP.
Limits
- A wrong Alphabet choice shifts letters from J onward.
- The Standard alphabet cannot tell I from J or U from V.
- Bacon's cipher gives no secrecy once a reader knows the rule.
